Ayurveda - Shirodhara Massage = oil dripping on your head
January 11th, 2009
I went to my friendly Ayurvedic therapist on Friday and got a massage with some paste made from lentils and then I had a Shirodhara. In Sanskrit language Shirodhara is composed of two words shiro + dhara, shiro means head and dhara means flow. In ayurveda the warm oil flow on head is known as Shirodhara.
I”d heard about it but had no idea the kind of brain state it would put me in. Watch the video for the best explanation but you lie on a table and your head hangs over a bowl. There’’s a bowl strung above your head with a small hole in the bottom. Oil is poured into this bowl and the oil flow is directed at the middle of your forehead. (3rd eye) It was the first time in a long time that the “mind chatter” stopped. When the Shirodhara was finished I felt like I”d woken up from a deep sleep but I knew I hadn”t been sleeping. I couldn”t think about anything. It was incredible. My hair is so soft from the oils. The only downside.. bring a cap when you go because the “oil hair” look probably won”t be in fashion anytime soon.
If you live in Melbourne and want to go (a lot cheaper than what day spas charge) let me know and i”ll give you the details..

Hi Chris, unfortunately the place I went to no longer does it. The heated oil smell didn’t work well with other beauty services. I will see if I can find someone else in Melbourne. Check back in a few weeks.

Thanks for the response Lis. Will look around Melb for a place that does not cost too much. Cheers - chris
